DEEP DIVE INTO TRELLIS

Welcome to the newest addition to the Deep Dive series! In this course, we’ll be immersing ourselves in the wonderful world of trellis patterns and their many creative filling stitches. Over the course, we’ll explore a wide range of designs and techniques, using a rich variety of materials—think wool, silk, stranded cotton, beads, and even goldwork threads—to bring different textures and effects to life.

As with all Deep Dive courses, we’ll begin by focusing on the core techniques. This means starting with simpler designs so you can really get to grips with the foundations. Once your skills and confidence grow, we’ll begin to experiment—introducing more complex ideas like knotting, wrapping, double trellis, weaving, and layered grids that sit under or over other stitches.

Throughout the course, I’ll encourage you to play and explore, developing your own ideas while still grounding everything in solid technique. My aim is to give you the tools and confidence to not only follow along, but to adapt and create.

It’s more than just a how-to…

When I first planned this sampler, I had a clear set of techniques in mind—but as I stitched, more ideas kept appearing, and that’s exactly what I want to share with you. I also want to inspire you to take creative risks, make thoughtful decisions, and adapt the examples I show to suit your own style. I know stepping away from a structured plan can feel a bit daunting, but with guidance and support, you’ll start trusting your instincts more and more.

This course is about so much more than just learning the stitches—it’s about building confidence, mastering techniques, and finding your own creative voice. I’ll be sharing plenty of practical tips, shortcuts, and lessons learned the hard way, so you can spend less time stuck and more time enjoying the process.

Let’s take your embroidery to the next level in this comprehensive live online course. You’ll learn fresh techniques, refine your approach, and fall in love with trellis stitch and all its amazing possibilities.

course overview

This is a three-term course running from September to July, carefully structured to guide you through foundational, intermediate, and advanced stages of working with trellis patterns. Each term brings a new set of skills, from classic trellis to intricate embellishments using specialty threads and materials.

We’ll begin by building a strong technical base—focusing on even spacing, parallel lines, and mastering basic trellis stitches and simple fillings.

Techniques Covered: Straight and diagonal trellis with fillings such as cross stitch, satin stitch, bullion knots, French knots, and lazy daisies.

Focus: Getting comfortable with the grid structure and refining your stitching technique.

Term 1

Term 2

Now that the basics are under your belt, we’ll introduce more variety and creative approaches. This term is about pushing the boundaries and trying new things.

Techniques Covered: Double trellis, battlement couching, wrapped, knotted and woven fillings, and distortion techniques.

Focus: Encouraging your creativity, developing your own stitch variations, and gaining confidence with more complex fillings.

In the final term, we’ll dive into the rich textures of embellishment and mixed media, working with beads, sequins, and goldwork threads.

Techniques Covered: Beaded trellis, sequins, passing thread, plate, cutwork, and combining materials to create dimensional effects.

Focus: Polishing your skills and learning how to incorporate advanced techniques into your own work with precision and artistry.

Term 3

By the end of the course, you’ll have a comprehensive trellis sampler, showcasing a wide variety of stitches and techniques. You’ll leave with not only your sampler but also the knowledge and confidence to apply these techniques to your own projects.

What Our Students Say

  • <autoplay speed=3></autoplay>"I’m so happy that I took the plunge "

I’m so happy that I took the plunge (no pun intended) and signed up for the Deep Dive into Goldwork.  Sara is an amazing tutor and has thought of everything to make this an enjoyable and achievable course.  I would highly recommend Sara and her fabulous course without hesitation.

    Lesley

  • "I really have the highest praise for Sara"

I am writing as a student of Sara Rickards who has been thrilled to learn all of the new techniques in her Deep Dive into Goldwork course. We are into the 3rd term and I am in awe of Sara's abilities--both as an embroiderer and as a teacher. This is the third course that I've taken from Sara and I plan on signing up for a fourth.

  • "Sara clearly enjoys teaching"

Sara clearly enjoys teaching and likes interacting with people which gives the course a great atmosphere (both online and in person). Her explanations are crystal clear, she has additional recordings of her Zoom classes that allow reference to the demonstration, and even her kits are clearly explained and well-ordered. Sara always comes up with beautiful things to do and is very patient as we less experienced/talented students try to imitate her techniques. I don't think that any of us can go wrong by learning from such a creative, patient person.

  • "Sara is an excellent teacher."

Sara is an excellent teacher. Not only does she show the history and technical execution of stitches and techniques, but she also shows us how to modify and develop the techniques. She supports, advises, and encourages us when we are stuck.

    Andrejka

  • "I shall be signing up for the course next year"

I have completed both the Deep dive into Goldwork and Stumpwork courses and find Sara a very clear tutor who is very patient with her students . Nothing is too much trouble and I have looked forward to the zoom course each week on both the courses. I shall be signing up for the course next year.
