Meet Sara
Behind Well Embroidered
As a Royal School of Needlework Tutor with over 20 years of experience, I’m excited to share my expertise with you and help elevate your embroidery projects.
I founded Well Embroidered in 2011 with the simple goal of sewing beads onto beautiful dresses. However, my passion has since evolved into sharing my knowledge with others. I discovered my love for teaching by chance, when I was asked to fill in for an unwell Tutor at the Royal School of Needlework. That experience ignited a new path for me—one that centres around sharing the joy of embroidery and watching students develop their own passion and confidence.
My goal is to help you create stunning embroidered pieces you never imagined possible when you first picked up a needle. I want to empower you to create your own designs and choose stitches and colour palettes that harmonise beautifully. My teaching focuses on mastering the technical aspects of each stitch, followed by ample practice and refinement.
No matter where you are on your embroidery journey, I recommend exploring our free resources page. There, you’ll find tips and techniques you can start applying today to enhance your stitching and see immediate improvements.
Your Tutor
Well Embroidered was founded by renowned hand embroidery expert, teacher and artist Sara Rickards. Over the years Sara has worked with both businesses and individuals to create bespoke hand embroidered pieces. Her love of teaching led her to also sharing her extensive embroidery knowledge and passion through her popular online classes and has taught sell-out classes around the world. Now running her own successful business, she has been able to expand and develop her teaching opportunities with self-paced classes and YouTube content meaning students can choose how they want to learn with Sara.
With over 20 years in the industry Sara’s projects have been featured in Stitch magazine, she’s created bespoke pieces for fashion and bridal designers alike, conserved ecclesiastical embroidery and still manages to find time to teach on the Certificate & Diploma programme at the Royal School of Needlework where she trained as an apprentice. Her expertise and eye for detail means she is much in demand by the RSN as an assessor.
Sara is passionate about inspiring her students to create their own exquisite embroidery and creates bespoke embroidery designs ready to be taught. She has a talent for clearly explaining the method behind working an embroidery stitch, whilst anticipating potential problems students may have and correcting them before too much unpicking is needed. This is makes her a highly trusted and in demand teacher.
