SUNBURST CREWELWORK

Sweeping curves of colour.

Layers of stitched texture built slowly.

Small, intricate details that add more interest the closer you look.

Sunburst Crewelwork is a celebration of expressive stitching—designed to help you create embroidery that feels rich, flowing, and full of life.

Worked in an exotic colour palette of pinks, corals, and warm oranges, lifted with touches of teal, you’ll stitch a design that combines bold shapes with delicate detail.

This is a piece to get lost in—in the best possible way.

A 10-Week Course in Colour, Texture That Quietly Builds Confidence

WHAT YOU’LL CREATE

Over ten sessions, you’ll work this striking Sunburst Crewelwork Design—from its flowing stem to its layered floral forms and intricate decorative elements.

You’ll learn how to create:

Smooth, sculpted petals with soft shading.

Textural contrast between dense stitching and open elements.

Flowing lines that guide the eye across the design.

Small, refined details that bring the whole piece to life.

Every section introduces something new, while still feeling connected and cohesive.

A COURSE DESIGNED TO GROW and develop YOUR skills and CONFIDENCE

This course is for stitchers who know the basics and are ready for the next step—but in a way that feels calm, supported, and enjoyable.

We’ll take things slowly and steadily, focusing on:

Building control and consistency in your stitches through tension and accuracy.

Understanding how and where to use each technique.

Gaining confidence through practice, not pressure.

You don’t need to be perfect—you just need to begin.

Techniques You’ll Explore

The design has been carefully created to introduce a wide range of techniques in a natural, intuitive way.

You’ll work with:

Long and Short Stitch for soft, subtle shading.

Satin Stitch for smooth, filled sections.

Fishbone for structured, flowing leaves.

Stem Stitch and Raised Stem Band for outlines and filling.

Raised Chain Band for added interest.

Closed Fly and Buttonhole for shape and texture.

Bullion Knots and French Knots for fine accents.

Whipped Bars and Woven Wheels for decorative interest.

Burden Stitch for pattern and shading.

Vandyke for texture.

Trellis Patterns for intricate details.

….and many more.

Each stitch is taught gently and clearly, with time to practise and refine.

What Our Students Say

  • <autoplay speed=3></autoplay>"I’m so happy that I took the plunge "

I’m so happy that I took the plunge (no pun intended) and signed up for the Deep Dive into Goldwork.  Sara is an amazing tutor and has thought of everything to make this an enjoyable and achievable course.  I would highly recommend Sara and her fabulous course without hesitation.

    Lesley

  • "I really have the highest praise for Sara"

I am writing as a student of Sara Rickards who has been thrilled to learn all of the new techniques in her Deep Dive into Goldwork course. We are into the 3rd term and I am in awe of Sara's abilities--both as an embroiderer and as a teacher. This is the third course that I've taken from Sara and I plan on signing up for a fourth.

    Noreen Hickok

  • "Sara clearly enjoys teaching"

Sara clearly enjoys teaching and likes interacting with people which gives the course a great atmosphere (both online and in person). Her explanations are crystal clear, she has additional recordings of her Zoom classes that allow reference to the demonstration, and even her kits are clearly explained and well-ordered. Sara always comes up with beautiful things to do and is very patient as we less experienced/talented students try to imitate her techniques. I don't think that any of us can go wrong by learning from such a creative, patient person.

  • "Sara is an excellent teacher."

Sara is an excellent teacher. Not only does she show the history and technical execution of stitches and techniques, but she also shows us how to modify and develop the techniques. She supports, advises, and encourages us when we are stuck.

    Andrejka

  • "I shall be signing up for the course next year"

I have completed both the Deep dive into Goldwork and Stumpwork courses and find Sara a very clear tutor who is very patient with her students . Nothing is too much trouble and I have looked forward to the zoom course each week on both the courses. I shall be signing up for the course next year.
